What’s your favourite chick flick?

June 7, 2011

As an aspiring women’s popular fiction novelist *ahem*, one of my guiltiest pleasures is watching rom coms. The cheesier, the better. I don’t really mind if it stars Drew Barrymore/Katherine Heigl, whoever, as long as it’s your standard girl meets boy, overcomes love obstacle, girl gets boy plot, I’m happy.
I was having a look at the brilliant blog Movies For Dads, which is obviously about… movies for dads, and while I absolutely love lots of those films, too, it started me thinking about my favourite flicks for chicks.
So here, in no particular order, are five of the ones I can watch over and over again (obviously when there’s no one else in to pour scorn, and preferably with some chocolate close to hand):

*Enchanted. Totally not what I was expecting, and of course it has Patrick Dempsey…

*Serendipity. The perfect Christmas movie, and John Cusack is just delectable in it.

*Ten Things I Hate About You. How sexy was Heath Ledger in this movie?
*27 Dresses. My favourite scene without a doubt is the one where they sing Benny and the Jets. LOVE it.

*The Princess Diaries. The part where she’s transformed with tweezers? Genius.
What’s your favourite chick flick? I’d love to know.

  • HerMelness Speaks June 7, 2011 at 10:24 pm

Bridges of Madison County. Client Eastwood, Meryl Streep. I think you need to be older though to appreciate it? That is, past romantic, fairy tale-type love.

    • Liz Jarvis June 8, 2011 at 7:24 am

No I appreciate it too *cough*.

  • Crystal Jigsaw June 7, 2011 at 10:23 pm

I’m not really sure to be honest, I prefer police and detective dramas than chick flicks. But if I had to say one I’d say Indecent Proposal, if it’s classed as such. I love Demi Moore and adore Robert Redford, which has just made me think of another I love, The Horse Whisperer, Kirsten Scott Thomas starring opposite Redford, fabulous film.

    CJ xx

    • Liz Jarvis June 8, 2011 at 7:24 am

The Horse Whisperer! OMG such an affecting movie in it, and Redford was gorgeous in it.

  • Miss Behaving June 7, 2011 at 10:23 pm

    • Grace Marshall June 7, 2011 at 10:07 pm

The Notebook is definitely one of my favourites too – gosh did that make me cry! I also have a soft spot for Love Actually, Thelma and Louise and Romeo and Juliet.

      • Carolin June 8, 2011 at 12:13 am

God yes, The Notebook is terribly sad. Message in a Bottle makes me cry the Niagara Falls just as much though – must be because they’re both based on novels by Nicholas Sparks.
