The One with the Olympic Torch, but not Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders

July 27, 2012

So yesterday I joined the crowds in the King’s Road to see the Olympic Torch Relay as it made its way through Chelsea before heading for Buckingham Palace. I’d just been to the post office so decided to stay where I was, instead of making my way back up to Sloane Square.

It was a fantastic atmosphere, and apart from all the sponsorship vans (far too many), it was very entertaining. One van were giving out blowers (technical term) and the woman next to me grabbed one – and promptly dropped her Blackberry under a truck. Everyone gasped as the huge wheels rolled by – but fortunately her BB was fine. Bet she felt silly though.

Anyway, if I had gone back up to Sloane Square, I would have seen Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders in their Absolutely Fabulous gear running with the torch.

Instead I saw this guy.

Apparently he is a community worker. I got back to the office to discover my colleagues had seen Joanna and Jennifer, but as one of them pointed out, it’s not really about who is carrying the torch, it’s about the torch itself and what it represents.

I’m so proud to be a Londoner today. Let’s show ’em what we’ve got.
