The One with all the Huskies

sledding in norwaySo as I told you yesterday, one of the other highlights of my cruise round Norway (apart from the Northern Lights, of course) was the chance to go on a husky sled ride and meet the snow dogs. Don’t tell Yoda, but I’ve always loved Huskies and often thought that if I didn’t live in the city I’d love a Siberian Husky; and one of my favourite memories of mine and No 1 Son’s trip to Lapland was our husky sled ride. So of course I couldn’t wait to go on another one.

And the dogs were absolutely beautiful, a mix of Alaskan huskies and Siberian huskies. They were very friendly and happy to be stroked. I know some people (and Yoda, actually, because we have quite a few huskies living near us) find their faces a bit frightening but I think they’re beautiful. I loved this one…

…but my favourite has to be this one. Aren’t her eyes amazing?

They were all really excited to go sledding, and pulled us through the snow-covered forest and on to the frozen lake (where I lost my gloves, which were thankfully later retrieved. It was VERY cold). It was very bumpy (I’ve got a big bruise on my leg) and there were times I thought I was going to fall off, but it was lots of fun, and the huge difference between this sled ride and the Lapland one was that it was daylight (it was very dark in Lapland). I loved the dogs’ little blue slippers, which keep their feet warm, although apparently they do enjoy running when it’s cold. Annoyingly, as we were nearing the lake, the camera on my silly pomme phone actually stopped working, it was so cold, but I did manage to shoot this video, which gives you an idea of what a husky sled ride experience is like. Enjoy.
