The Great Gatsby is one of my all-time favourite novels. I studied it at uni, and I have watched the 1974 movie many times. While I never felt Mia Farrow was a very suitable Daisy, for me, Robert Redford was beautifully cast as Jay Gatsby – the perfect blend of detached cool and inner turmoil. The original Don Draper, in fact.
I adore Baz Luhrmann’s films and I will go to see The Great Gatsby remake (although I really don’t see why it needs to be in 3D – the story isn’t enough?). But as much as I love Leonardo DiCaprio, and I do, I just don’t see him as Jay Gatsby. Any more than I could see him playing The Sundance Kid.
And is it really necessary to remake EVERY movie classic? Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should. What next, Bradley Cooper as Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind in 3D?
*sigh*
