Paddington Bear, sandwiches and win a gorgeous Spode china set

May 31, 2011

My sister and I were big fans of Paddington Bear when we were growing up – we had the books, the teddies and we loved the TV series too. We even tried eating marmalade sandwiches (although admittedly preferred marmalade on toast, especially Lime).

So I was absolutely delighted when Spode sent me a double handed mug and porringer set from their Paddington Nursery collection. They’re absolutely beautiful and would be the perfect gift for a Christening or Naming ceremony, the kind of present that would be treasured for years.

Except… we don’t have any Christenings or Naming ceremonies coming up. So I’ve decided the nice thing to do is give you the chance to win them. And the obvious question is:

What’s your favourite sandwich, and why?

Leave your answer in the comments below and the winner will be chosen next Tuesday. Usual The Mum Blog competition rules apply.

Meanwhile, I thought you might like to be reminded of this clip of Paddington doing Singin’ in the Rain. Isn’t it fab?

Butter 2 slices of bread, spread peanut butter on one slice and chocolate spread on the other, spread 4 rich tea fingers with jam (I prefer strawberry) lay the biscuits on one slice of bread and sandwich together…… Enjoy

Any sandwich at the moment, as I’m trying to do low carb at the moment and would kill for bread.
My favourite though is probably really strong, crumbly, mature cheddar with raw onion and black pepper on crusty white Tiger bread. I stink afterwards but don’t care.

  • Stacey June 3, 2011 at 11:23 am

Mature Cheddar, tomato, small splash of vinegar and pinch of salt. Ooh! On freshly cut white bread from the Baker. Nom nom!

    I have so many faves:
    Pate and beetroot
Banana (has to be white bread and real butter)
    Avocado, chicken and bacon
Mozzarella, avocado, tomato and basil (best in a panini)
Marmalade sandwiches (great for a night shift)
    And my old current favourite:
    Peanut Butter, Marmite and Cucumber.

THE above ^^^^^^^ is why I am the size I am… and I have now been eating a no/low carb diet (apart from a few days over my daughters birthday) for 6 weeks.. and have lost 23lbs…
    So NO sandwiches for me!

My favourite sandwich is what my Dad and I call a ‘Dracula Sandwich’. He used to make it for me when i was a kid (many moons ago!).
It’s, from bottom up, a slice of toast, cheese, another slice of toast, jam and then toast on top.
The idea being the cheese represents bone, the jam blood and the toast skin/flesh.
I think/hope it began as a halloween treat!

  • Harpal Kaur June 2, 2011 at 8:29 am

  • Young Mummy May 31, 2011 at 10:37 pm

I didn’t have to think too long about this. Normally, I’m not a big sandwich fan, but it all changes when I’m on hols. I have very fond memories of crisp sandwiches – lightly salted or Paprika Lays, sandwiched in fresh bread, be it a Greek loaf or a French baguette. Holiday is the only time to eat these guilt-free!

  • I Heart Motherhood May 31, 2011 at 10:35 pm

If homemade then it’s Cheese and Pickle Every time! If it’s bought then a well known sandwich shop does a lovely Sweet Chilli chicken one that I love at the moment! I loved Paddington too!

  • dorkymum May 31, 2011 at 10:33 pm

    Oooh, EnglishMum, that sounds amazing.

I’m going to go with a Philadelphia and Marmite toasted sandwich though. Preferably washed down with a scorching hot cup of tea.

  • Emma Button May 31, 2011 at 9:56 pm

I’m not sure you want to know my sandwich preferences.. sometimes they’re weird.

Peanut butter and cheese is a current fave. Nom.

  • English Mum May 31, 2011 at 7:10 pm

I’m with Elaine on the nice bread – preferably warm, spread with mayo mixed with pesto (bear with me here), then layered with sliced mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and maybe some leftover roast chicken if I have some in the fridge. Nommage.

  • Elaine Livingstone May 31, 2011 at 6:52 pm

well Im strange I tend to buy nice bread, and just eat a slice of nice fresh dry bread as it comes…yum yum…but if I have to pick its a BLT with smoked bacon..

  • tina corder May 31, 2011 at 6:27 pm

I don`t think you can beat the classic bacon sandwich with HP sauce, you just cannot resist the smell of bacon cooking!

  • Jamie May 31, 2011 at 9:57 am

Banana, peanut butter and honey. Heaven. My mum used to make them for me to take to school. Sometimes she’d do them on white bread, rolled up so you’d get that pin wheel shape. Ah, memories. Great on toasted granary baguette as well, just mash the banana into the peanut butter, spread on both pieces of bread, drizzle over some honey (or maple syrup, that’s good too) and squeeze both bits of bread together. You can leave out the honey and season with salt n pepper instead, equally as good.

  • Jules Peters May 31, 2011 at 9:12 am

Tuna salad on multi grain. I can convince myself that its decadent when in fact its as healthy as….

Also wraps with chicken and mayo, mouth watering

  • Kanga_Rue May 31, 2011 at 8:56 am

I love a BLAT… a bacon, lettuce, avocado & tomato sandwich, preferably on some divine sourdough, lightly toasted. Hmm, now I’m hungry.

  • Kara Guppy May 31, 2011 at 8:24 am

My favourite sandwich is a Banana sandwich and it just had to be on White bread!
My Grandma used to make me them for lunch everytime we visited, which makes them even more special.
I prefer the banana sliced, but you can mash it and she used to add a sprinkle of sugar too if I wasn’t feeling well.
    Go on…..give one a try!!

  • Joyful May 31, 2011 at 8:17 am

Ooooo that’s a tough one…. I’d probably go with peanut butter and raspberry jam, or peanut butter with banana and honey, or just peanut butter with anything!X
