New Year, New Body. This is how it works

December 29, 2011

Ok so last year a group of us got together to form the support group ‘New Year, New Body’. The idea is that we all had one common goal: to lose some weight.

As a journalist I’ve written about more diets and spoken to more diet experts than I’ve had hot dinners (almost); I’ve also tried every possible diet, interviewed loads of success stories and so on. So what I know works is belonging to a group, where you can all gain support from each other, and once weekly weigh-ins.

So.

If you want to join in with New Year, New Body there are just a couple of rules:

1. You must have more than half a stone to lose, in accordance with the recommendations for your ideal weight for your height.
2. If you have a pre existing medical condition you must talk to your GP before starting a diet.
3. You must agree to lose no more than half a stone (that’s 7lb) in a three week period.

It’s entirely up to you which diet you follow. I like Weight Watchers, some people like Slimming World, Slim Fast, whatever. The point of New Year New Body isn’t to give you diet advice (although I really don’t recommend fasting). But there is just one thing you have to do:

You have to weigh yourself once a week and share your weight loss with the rest of the group.
I don’t mean share your actual weight – that’s between you and the bathroom scales. But sharing the weight loss with the rest of us will encourage you to keep going, and motivate you. I promise.

So that’s really all you need to know at this point. If you want to join New Year New Body, leave your details in the comments below, or if you’re shy, contact me via the contact form, and the hashtag is #newyearnewbody on twitter.

[…] Right now I’m staring at two half-eaten packets of chocolates, a box of Belgian truffles, and thinking about waddling into the kitchen for some more Brie. Although I managed to lose a stone and keep it off this year for various reasons I fell off the diet wagon and with some very exciting things coming up I definitely need to get back on it in 2013. But  I don’t intend to start eating sensibly until January 2nd, when once again I’ll be joining in with New Year New Body. Hi everyone *waves* – wow, there are so many of you!

Because so many people have requested to join via the blog and twitter I’ve set up a facebook group to make it more manageable. It’s called newyearnewbody and it has a picture of macaroons (like the one on this blog post).

But I realise not everyone is on facebook. So here are the New Year New Body guidelines for you:

On Tuesday (Jan 3) you need to weigh yourself (write your weight down, don’t tell us).

    You’re then aiming to lose:

    1. 7lb in 3 weeks
    or
    2. 1st in 6 weeks.

Every Tuesday you need to come back and share your weight loss here. If you don’t lose one week, it’s fine, that’s what we’re all here for, to help support you and keep you motivated.

When you’ve reached your first goal, you’ll set a new goal, and so on, until you reach your desired weight loss. The reason we do it like this is because small, attainable goals are much easier to achieve and you’re more likely to stay on track.

That’s it for now – good luck, and watch out for people using the #newyearnewbody hashtag on twitter!
