As I’m currently writing a few books which feature attractive men I’m very interested in characterisation – in films, TV, and books. I think for a male character to be truly sexy they have to have a little bit of the anti-hero about them, some sort of slightly bad (or at least questionable) undercurrent. Until Mad Men I would have said that Mr Darcy is surely the sexiest male character ever in literature, perhaps closely followed by Jane Eyre’s Mr Rochester (well, at least when he’s played on the big screen by Michael Fassbender).
And then of course on TV, there was Sawyer in Lost, who really belongs in a category all of his own *sigh*.
But Don Draper. He’s something else, right? This man has more layers than a tiramisu. Cad, liar, scoundrel, creative genius, friend, fighter, tortured enigma, and definitely a lover. We’ve seen him being really really bad (the lost weekend, all those women) – and being really really good (when he tried to stop Joan from sleeping with the client).
And boy, does he look good in a suit.
So what do you think? Is Don Draper the sexiest male character ever? I’d love to know.

Don Draper??? It’s the way he walks – oozes sex appeal. Some of us simply don’t need erudite conversation. Best to treat him as he’d treat you – love him and leave him – classy sex but don’t look back. He’s got more hang-ups than a school cloakroom.

Yes.
That is all. 🙂
No way. White-haired love God and middle-aged LSD experimenter Roger Sterling gets my vote all day long. I don’t care how old he is or that he is sexist – an off-the-top-of-my-head example is describing Joan as a “piece of ass” and her assets as “hillsides” he has roamed. I’ll tell you what he has that Don doesn’t: humour. He is much much funnier and wittier than dour old Don. If Don didn’t look like he does he’d never get any nookie. Whereas Roge will always be able to laugh women into the sack.
In a word – yes! The most perfectly imperfect character ever. Love him.
To look at, yes. Personality wise, hell no!
