Help! My birkis are smelly

August 1, 2011

Apologies in advance if this post is Too Much Information and shatters any illusions you may have that I live in a summer meadow and my hair is made of wheat *cough*.

Right now, I’m wearing my birkenstocks non-stop, because they’re really the only kind of sandals I can wear. But there’s a problem. Because they honk. I mean proper, parmigiana-style honking.

It’s an excuse of course to buy a shiny new pair of Birkis (which I’ve done – these ones in purple, aren’t they lovely?) but I really don’t want to throw away my other two patent pairs, because they’re only a year old and I love them.

So… has anyone got any tips for making birkis less smelly?

Not tried yet but apparently cat litter (unused!) takes the smell away. You are supposed to leave the cat litter overnight in the smelly shoes.

Have you tried wiping them with Baby Wipes? I wipe my sandals with Johnsons Baby wipes (normal not unscented) to give them a bit of a clean every so often, and they don’t honk!
