The Colosseum in Rome is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful buildings I’ve ever seen. It’s not just the size, but the colours of the stone seem to change according to the time of day.
I took this photo on my recent trip to Italy. It was a Friday lunchtime, and very warm – about 30C. The Colosseum was perfectly silhouetted against the perfect blue sky.
The Colosseum was built in 70-80 AD, which makes it over 1,940 years old. Imagine all those gladiators who stood and looked at that same sky as they entered the arena, all those terrible battles that took place. Incredible.
This is my entry for The Gallery – the theme this week is ‘sky’.
[…] Spanish city. It really is the most wonderful place – not as classically beautiful as say, Rome, although probably just as chaotic, but inspiring nontheless. And what I really enjoyed about it is […]
I am desperate to visit Italy! This pic is great. Makes me want to book a flight right away. X
That is a beautiful picture!
I loved Rome when I went but it mostly chucked it down. The coloseum still looked very majestic against a murky sky though ๐
Wow, that really is a thought to dwell on. Incredible.
Beautiful!
A beautiful photo. I would love to visit x
what a background! – I think a blue sky makes it seem even more dramatic
