I’m incredibly lucky to have been on some fabulous cruise holidays this year, but already (well, it is September) my thoughts are turning to 2014 – and No 1 on my cruise holiday wishlist for next year are the islands of Hawaii.
As a family we’re very fortunate to have visited O’ahu twice, and what I love most about Hawaii is the fact that it combines the best of two words – Pacific Island with American state. So you get that whole laid back lifestyle, Polynesian traditions including the famous l’uau, incredible food (and Hawaiian shortbread – this has to be tasted to be believed, it is the crumbliest most delicious shortbread IN THE WORLD), and of course that wonderful surf – plus my favourite parts about US culture too, like great service and stylish shopping malls. The beaches are glorious, with proper thick caster sugar sand and warm, clear sea, the volcanic landscape incredibly diverse (lots of lush rainforest and waterfalls), and the people are wonderful. If you’ve ever watched 50 First Dates… it is exactly like that (we also visited Kualoa Ranch, the place where that movie was filmed… it was also the location for Lost).
So Kaua’i, Maui, and the Big Island have been on my wishlist forever. But when you consider how long it takes to fly to Honolulu (and you have to change planes in LA), the best possible way to visit all the islands in one trip is on Hawaii cruises, so that you can explore each one without having to fly again from island to island. The idea of being able to wake up in one of these beautiful places every morning, and enjoy the spectacular scenery from a stateroom balcony is getting more and more appealing, particularly as the temperatures start to drop here. Hopefully I’ll get there next year – fingers crossed 😉
